Carlos Machado

Mr. Machado started training when he was 4 under his uncles, Carlos and Helio Gracie in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is the eldest of 5 brothers: Roger, Rigan, Jean Jacques, and John Machado. He is ranked as a 9th Degree Coral Belt and has been teaching for over 34 years.

In the early 90’s Mr. Machado started teaching in America; in April 1994 he moved to Los Angeles, California where he met martial arts movie star Chuck Norris, who was instrumental in promoting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the Machado family. Since then, Mr. Norris has been one of the greatest advocates of Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Mr. Machado lived in Los Angeles until the end of 1995 when he moved to Dallas, Texas.

He taught Brazilian jiu-jitsu out of the same building in which Chuck Norris's television show" Walker, Texas Ranger" was filmed. This allowed Mr. Machado to teach at his studio and take part in many episodes of the popular TV show. He often assisted on choreographing fight scenes with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Besides running his school, Mr. Machado has been involved in competition as well. Winning State and World titles from 1982-1989, such as:

  • The Pan American of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (97/98)
  • Several events in the U.S. (U.S Open 98/99)
  • The World Master's Championships (2000) in two weight divisions (middle weight and open class).
  • He currently holds the highest rank of this style in the Southwest (Ninth Degree Coral Belt) and is considered the "Godfather" of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

In Southwest Carlos has built one of the fastest growing affiliate school programs in the country which includes representatives in Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Philadelphia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, Rhode Island, Mississippi, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, England, France, Australia and Mexico.

Each brother has accomplished remarkable success as competitors and instructors, winning national, pan-american and world titles, and occasionally venturing in the entertainment world (with multiple appearances on TV shows and motion pictures). They have been portrayed on hundreds of covers of martial arts magazines; in addition, they have published instructional DVD series, books, TV documentaries, and even comic books!

RCJ Machado Jiu-Jitsu is on a mission to bring the best of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the World through the dedication of family training and high quality education.
